Air Wick colour change in RICH VANILLA AND CARAMEL SWIRL

Hi b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l people!

The Candle

Packaged in an opaque glass tumbler the Air Wick Colour Changing Candle isn’t just fragrance infused but also emanates a subtle glow from the wax which changes colour once it’s lit.

This may sound gimmicky and my first thoughts when I bought it were that it was going to be one of those marketing tricks to get you to buy a product and then be let down by it so I had very low expectations when I bought mine but decided to give it a try anyway. Air Wick claim that you can expect to receive around 30 hours of burning time from a single candle and that it’s fragrance will create a warming aroma around your home as well as giving off a gentle rainbow-effect glow.

There are different variations of fragrance to chose from, I selected Rich Vanilla & Caramel Swirl simply because I like the smell of vanilla and thought the caramel would add a little depth to the overall fragrance and placed mine on my fireplace, lit it and waited for the magic to happen. Surprisingly I was quite impressed with the candle, not only by how it smelt but by the colour changing effect, it’s a lot brighter than I thought it was going to be and is incredibly relaxing to watch it create a prism effect with its glow. Once the wick is lit and starts melting the wax in the glass jar there must be a heat activated trigger that starts off the colour change process and over the course of a few seconds the candle emits a glow that changes from green to orange, then to red, purple and blue. Where I have my candle stood, the hearth of my fireplace, it gives off a surprising amount of light which illuminates the surrounding area nicely and really is relaxing to just sit and look at. It’s not too bright that it becomes a distraction but is noticeable enough to draw your interest and I must admit that I have been pretty impressed with mine from Air Wick and whilst I do think it’s quite quirky and expensive at full price it does add a bit of something special to just a bog standard wax-jarred candle.

The Vanilla and Caramel aroma is pleasant enough, it is true to life but isn’t as strong as similar ones from Yankee. The aroma is quite subtle rather than being anything that fills a room but it’s nice enough and does add to the ambiance of the glow. I wouldn’t recommend this particular candle for anyone who likes really strong smelling ones though as you might be disappointed but for those who like subtle fragrances then this would certainly be suitable. It’s aroma is sweet, the vanilla is the dominant note but is tempered by the caramel to stop it from becoming too sickly and whilst it did remind me of a candle I’d had before from Yankee I don’t think it’s as authentic and did smell a little synthetic and lacked the full-flavoured aroma that Yankee is renowned for.

The main selling point as far as I can see with this particular candle is it’s colour changing abilities and its in that area that the candle excels. Although Air Wick claims that the candle will burn and give off an aroma for upto 30 hours I have found this to be inaccurate, 10 hours seems to be the lifespan of the actual aroma but it’s still worth burning after that period simply for the glow it produces. Had it’s aroma been a little stronger and lasted longer this would have been a five star product in my opinion as it should definitely appeal to anyone who likes candles and it’s glow does add an extra level of interest that is nice to see and watch.

Overall though there’s enough here for me to award a very good rating of 4 stars so that’s what this gets from me, I do think they are slightly overpriced at R80-90.00 in terms of the fragrance it produces but I do like the colour change effect and I would definitely recommend this candle to other people.
Thanks for reading my review.
